Why are video games so addictive?

Games

We’ve talked about the addictiveness of video games on this blog before, but we’ve never actually taken the time to look at why they are so addictive. One of the main reason why they can be so highly addictive is because of the way in which they are designed.

Video game designers are always searching for ways to urge more people play their games and the spread the word. They accomplish this by making a game just challenging enough to keep you returning for more, but not so hard that the player eventually gives up. It’s all about finding this perfect balance. It’s what makes a designer great! In other words, success for a gamer often feels just out of reach. If you’re worried that you’re hooked into gaming, here are a couple of of the most symptoms:

  • Feelings of restlessness and/or irritability when unable to play
  • Preoccupation with thoughts of previous online activity or anticipation of subsequent online session
  • Lying to friends or relations regarding the quantity of your time spent playing
  • Isolation from others so as to spend longer gaming

How Many Hours should you Play Video Games?

Games

As you may already know, every age (or generation) has its own unique culture, and video gaming has played a huge part since the 1980s. And although a lot of kids and adults are enthralled with video games the same way that others like the theatre or cinema, too much of it is very bad for kids and adults alike. So, it’s important that there should be some level of gaming restrictions. That’s why many people will want to know, how many hours should you play video games for each day? To answer the question correctly, there is no one-size-fits-all time or solution. However, let’s delve right into it and discuss the options you may have. Many parents agree that an hour a day is a reasonable number and should be enough for their kids to play video games, which is based upon results from scientific studies. Others think that’s outrageous. It should be nothing less than two hours, and nothing more than three hours. So, it’ll be reasonable to put the range between one to three hours. And this figures take into account adults who play video games with no supervision.

A few new trends in gaming

Games

Let’s start this one by talking about VR (Virtual Reality). VR has already come a long way and though it has drawn attention, it’s not reflected in sales just yet. That said, by 2020, it is said that gamers will spend billions on immersive gaming, which is more than 20 times what they do today.

Another trend that deserves a mention is streaming. With the rise in ‘e-sports’, there has come a massive opportunity for streaming and televising live video gameplay. It’s weird to think, but people don’t just like playing games, they also like watching professional gamers play games!

Digital currencies and collectibles are also very big right now too as gamers absolutely love being able to rank up, unlocking achievements and enhancing their characters. You’ll now struggle to find a game which is not featuring achievements in the forms of points or currency nowadays.
