Lets Debate – Game Age Ratings

News

Age ratings on games, are they important? The big debate between parents and children, should children be allowed to play games rated above their age? Today, we are going to debate it!

Age ratings on games are essentially there to protect the company selling the game. It means that the content or language within the game is not deemed suitable for people under that age. This is where the debate begins as teenagers are wanting to play 18 games which some parents won’t allow due to the age rating.

Games that are rated 18 are not much different from those that are rated 16. The main difference is the graphics, meaning how much they show you. For example, a game rated 18 may be more sexual or violent than those rated 16. The language used may also be more foul, meaning more swearing will be heard. With regards to this, it should entirely depend upon your child. If you know what they have been presented with beforehand, for example, have they already heard swearing or played other violent games. These higher age-rated games may be suitable for them. However, we would recommend watching gameplay before you decide as some games will not be suitable.

The same debate occurs the other way round. With gamers assuming that games rated with lower ages than what they are will be too childish for them. This is not the case at all, with some of the most popular games amongst all gamers being PG-rated. Again, the only difference will be the language and graphicness, this does not mean it will not be a good game to play.

To conclude, age ratings are important. They are there to protect our children from being shown content they shouldn’t be seeing. If your child is sure they want to play the game rated higher, you should always view the content yourself before purchasing.

Should Children Play Violent Video Games?

Games

Gaming is a hobby for people of all ages, with many more children becoming interested in gaming and wanting to participate. But video and online games which are being released are becoming more violent and graphic. We would advise you to keep your children away from these violent games for as long as possible as it can affect the way they act. Yes, violent games do allow you to distress, but they are not overly suitable for children. The choice is always yours as a parent, but we would recommend you watching gameplay footage of the games your children are asking for before you purchase them. This way you know what they will be viewing and if it is suitable for them. Some violent games are made suitable for younger children, such as Minecraft and Fortnight, but you still need to be wary with the online settings as adults also play these, so foul language may be heard.

Is Gaming Only For Kids?

Games

Most people assume that gaming is only for children and teenagers. But this is not the case, gaming can continue into adulthood. It can offer many benefits to our adult lives. Gaming is not only for children, it is important that we do continue to play some form of games in adulthood. This is because gaming helps to stimulate our brains. Different parts of our brains are stimulated when playing games to our day to day life activities. It helps us to continue to grow multiple different skills, such as multi tasking and building friendships. There are many games out there which are directed to adults and older generations. For example, brain training is one game which helps to keep your brain in its best possible shape by testing different skills. There are also some 18 rated games which are based around fighting, this is due to the language used within them. But these games can help us to relieve stress, keeping us calmer throughout the day.

Favourite Family Games : Mario

Games

There are so many games which we can play as families. One of my personal favourites are any of the Mario games. Let us look into some of these games.

Mario Kart
This is an extremely popular game for all families. Mario Kart has been around for many years, offering many years of fun. This allows you to be competitive with your family. Mario Kart is even perfect for younger children as the controls and tracks are simple.

Super Mario Bros
This is a story based game. Super Mario Bros is much more suitable for older children who like a challenge. Most of the games in this saga you can play from 1 to 4 players. This is good for team building and growing your communication skills.

Mario Party
Another excellent choice for the whole family. This game allows you to play party games with your family playing as Mario characters. Some of the mini games include rowing a boat as a team or competing against each other to create a mini image.

Mobile gaming is becoming extremely popular. But what are some of the best mobile apps? Today I am going to share with you my top three!

Pokemon Go is one of my personal favourite mobile gaming apps. It is not just for kids but adults as well. I like this app as it encourages you to venture out of your house and explore. You can discover new places whilst playing this game.
