Nintendo Switch: Everything you need to know

Games

If last month’s Nintendo Direct is an indication, the upcoming Nintendo Switch is probably one of the most hyped game consoles right now. But, should you buy it now or wait? Here is what we know so far so that it can help you decide.

When is the release date?

The system will launch on March 3rd, 2017 in the US, Japan, some European countries and other selected regions. The suggested retail price is £279.99. Preorders are open on several retailers; so better check it out before it is too late!

What is included with the system?

You get the Switch console, two Joy-con controls (one left and one right), a dock, a Joy-con grip and the usual HDMI cable and USB AC adapter. Unlike other systems like the WiiU, there are no plans for a game bundle.

How good is the battery life?

A full charge will last you between 2 and 6 hours of gameplay but it depends on the specific game you are playing. For example, the battery will last around 3 hours while playing the upcoming “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild”.

How much will games cost?

Most of the games are around the £50 mark.

What are the game modes?

The Switch can be played in Handheld mode, Tabletop mode, and TV mode.

Is Nintendo Switch retro-compatible with Wii U or 3DS?

So far, we know that physical copies are not compatible because the Switch lacks a Wii U or 3DS game card slot. However, there might be a possibility that digital copies could be compatible.

Which games are already confirmed for the Switch?

There are many planned games for the Switch, the most notable ones being: Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Skyrim, Splatoon, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Is the console region locked?

No, you can play games from any region.

How about online services?

We know that Nintendo plans to charge a fee for their online service, but there are no details about the price yet.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Trailer

Games

Nearly 10 million people have watched the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer and it’s safe to say that the build up to the release is going to be huge. Some say there’s going to be more of a build up than ever before with the game expected to make record sales in late 2017. This wouldn’t surprise us because Red Dead Redemption really was a legendary game. Many refer to it as GTA with horses instead of cars but it’s not, it’s a completely different world and one that’s going to be 10 times better this time. The visuals in the trailer look spectacular and I’m pleased Rockstar have taken their time with this one. We can only hope the game is perfected even more, but either way we’re sure it’s going to be the biggest game of the year. If you’d like to see the trailer check out the video below.

Have you played Don’t Grind?

Don’t Grind is a weird yet wonderful game you can buy from your mobile’s app store. It’s basically a game in which you have to try and not grind a banana who is a fun and funky character. The cartoon buzzsaws are what you’re trying to avoid and you basically have to keep your banana happy but helping it miss the obstacles, which also includes lasers. It’s a game that’s easy to play and it will kill a few minutes if you need a break from work or something to keep you entertained on the train. The cute visuals and expressions are what make this game though and it has the character to become a cult hit. Sometimes it is the most simple games that make it to the top of the mobile gaming charts so we’ll certainly be keeping our eyes on this new release. If you haven’t tried it already give it a go, tap you’re banana away from trouble!

Becoming a game reviewer

Playing games is challenging yet fun and reviewing can be the same too. When you play a game, you’re likely to reflect on it after. Only you will know whether it ticked the right boxes for you and if you know what makes a good game you should start sharing your opinion. You can review games via a blog, social media channels or a website and it can help you progress in the gaming industry. Many people who work in gaming spend time reviewing games and the more time you dedicate to reviewing, the more authority you’ll have in the gaming industry. There are plenty of video game reviewers out there but there are always room for more opinions and yours could be one of them. If you love gaming why not give reviewing a chance and see how you get on. You never know, you may love it and develop into a pro.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition

Minecraft Pocket Edition is a fantastic game for your mobile phone, whether you’re on Android or Apple. Unlike many others you can buy from the app store, it offers stunning visuals, smooth gameplay and virtually unlimited possibilities. We really mean it, if you can dream it then there is a good chance you can build it and that is why this is such a hot game in the charts right now. You can explore randomly generated world and build amazing properties with your cubes. It could be a small apartment or a huge castle; it is completely up to you. You also get the chance to craft weapons and armour to fend off any dangerous characters. There are some in-app purchases along the way but only hard core Minecraft fans will want to upgrade, the basic version has just enough going in in our opinion.

Worms WMD on the PS4

I used to spend all of my Saturdays playing Worms on the PlayStation 2 and I’m glad to see it’s now back on my screen thanks to the PS4. We’ve known for years that this 2D battler can hold its own next to bigger and more self-serious strategy games and there is one major positive with Worms this time round; it doesn’t try to be something it’s not. You really do go back to basics with this one, everything is friendly and familiar like it was on the PS2 except this time it’s sharper. The crisp cartoon visuals and sounds aren’t far from the original either and that’s why it’s performing so well in the charts. The only problem with this game is that it’s set at quite a steep price, so only real hardcore Worms fans will want to add this timeless classic to their collection.
