Braid: The perfect indie game

Games

The indie game movement has been slowly brewing over the years; way back to when basement developers were a real thing. However, with the release of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 independent games became mainstream affairs, releasing on home consoles for the first time via the Playstation Network and Xbox Live architectures. One of the first major, breakout hits was Jonathon Blow’s Brain. A 2d platformer like Mario, Braid featured several mind bending mechanics; like rewinding time when you move to the left, and fast forwarding time when you move to the right – Braid proved to be incredibly popular, and incredibly challenging.

Braid also proved to be one of the first indie games to have a wonderful AAA worthy soundtrack, and beautiful hand painted graphics. Braid was instantly recognised by players and critics alike as a wonderful, unique game worthy of everyone’s attention. Even now, a few years later, Braid is still seen as one of the best indie games of all time.

FIFA 15 – The Online Play Issues

Games

Many people have been given FIFA 15 as a superb christmas present, and while the game is one of the most popular for PS4 and Xbox One consoles, there are some issues with online play.

Unfortunately, lag is as prominent as ever, and you can find yourself tearing your hair out when you’re winning 3-0, only to see the game disconnect completely. The quitters are still out there, and you’ll certainly come across them if you find yourself on a bit of a winning streak. Many sore losers would rather quit a game and start another then fight it out until the final minute.

Finding a gamer that matches your ability is easy but finishing a match seems to be even harder. Whether there’s someone quitting early, lag issues or disconnections, you almost feel relieved when you actually do complete a game!

Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor

Games

We have seen just within the last couple of weeks the release of a new game based upon the story written and developed by Tolkien in his books, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

This game follows a storyline which isn’t part of the story developed by Tolkien, but it does give you some insight into the world, which is no doubt important for fans of the books.

It follows a ranger of Gondor (the biggest human empire), who was killed, along with his family, and then resurrected by a spirit who grants him the powers of a wraith, so that he can exact revenge on those who killed him and his family, within Mordor, the evil empire ruled by Salron, the master of the ring of power.

In the game you will be able to fight with a few weapons, as well as the mysterious wraith powers that you’ve acquired. With these tools, you fight to defeat all of your enemies, gain vengeance, and uncover myths of Middle-Earth.

Titanfall

Games

Titanfall was one of the most highly anticipated game titles of 2014, with people knowing it was coming for three years before it was released, which many people were awaiting eagerly. Looking purely at all of the media hype surrounding its release, you could quite easily believe that it should be the best gamer ever made, but for most people it fell well short of that. To be fair, considering it was made by the same people which co-designed Call of Duty, you can understand why the level of anticipation for the game was so high. And it’s by no means a bad game, just in most people’s estimation not the best game.

For those unfamiliar with the game, you should definitely consider buying it, but just don’t expect it to be anything way, way above any other high quality first person shooter game, such as Black Ops.

God of War Collection on the PS Vita

Games

Handheld gaming systems may have to compete with mobile phones as well as each other today but you really do notice the difference between mobile games and those on the PS Vita, especially with the likes of God of War Collection.

In this game the graphics are accelerated and powerful, and the storyline is long and progressing, which can’t be said for the 69p games you find in mobile app stores. In this game you are the Spartan Kratos and you’re seeking revenge on Ares, the God of War. Of course he didn’t get that title for nothing and you’ll have to give it everything you’ve got to defeat this God.

No mortal has every achieved this before but you can be the first, and there are many stunts, puzzles and epic battles along the way. The scenery is essentially ancient Greece combines with a mythological adventure and there really are no games on the offering that offer this type of storyline and gameplay.
